Question 1st PC buyers advice wanted please (NOT for me!)

Yup, I know I've made a similar post to this before as I was considering getting a new "base unit", but this plea is for my girlfriends sister who is after her first PC. And like me, she doesn't need a monitor, mouse or keyboard etc.

The three choices for consideration are below, please check them out and comment ASAP please. She has the cash burning a hole in her pocket.

And before I get accused of 'pretending to ask for advice on someone elses behalf when you all think it's for me' - well it's NOT. Don't you lot forget there is a little outstanding problem of 2,500 still owed on credit cards !!!

I swear this advice is NOT for me. Thanks in advance and please give your advice here.

2) http://www.microdirect.co.uk/company...ems/budget.asp

3) http://www.microdirect.co.uk/company...tems/omega.asp

350 is a bit too much for her, but is it worth the extra cash outlay ?

Ta !

Oh yeah, she said she def. wants a CD-copier as she wants to make her own music CD's. Don't think she's any interest in a DVD player/copier though.

Not that it would matter if it was for you anyway! You still don't want to be ripped off on PC components.

Is she prepared to do self-build? If not, does she need an OS?

Self-build ? She knows absolutely nothing about computers thats why we don't want her to get shafted....

She also don't wanna buy something thats practically un-upgradeable/future proof (as mine is) and be stuck 2-3 years down the line (like I am).

Oh yeah, she will need an OS - I have contacted microdirect asking what else you get with the base unit but they haven't replied......

I still use Win.98 - wouldn't have a clue how to use any other version but no ones gonna give you 98 nowadays are they ?!

doesnt matter what you buy or how much it costs, it will always be difficult to upgrade in 3 years time.

they all look fine for the price, I doubt a pc could be home-built to such specs for the same price.

Thanks Ian

With regards to not being able to upgrade any further, in my case, I can't fit any more memory or higher CPU than I can now as the mobo won't accept it !

Well, I tell a lie as it can take an AMD K6-233 MMX cpu and I have a 200MMX one ! hardly worth upgrading - is it ? Not that you can even find one nowadays

Sorry, that was my problem, not hers

Have just researched same for a friend and came up with:-

Dos Computer - how do they do it at the price?

Eclipse Computers - well established

Thenethightstreet - this was the one she bought. Home system PC. 374.00. About two weekd delivery time.

So many now do not include a monitor.

Why not secondhand or refurb, quite some good buys.

Me again

Right then, my other halfs sister went and bought a PC from a guy at work at the weekend and this is what she got for 250 (well, she swears it was 250).

AMD Athlon XP1700 processor
228MB RAM (I know it can't be 228 but how do I find out ?)
S3 Graphics ProSavage DDR video card (don't know what memory)
ATAPI CD-RW 52xmax CD burner
10GB Hard drive
15" monitor

with Windows 2000 Professional as the OS and Nero (v7?) CD burning software.

Is that worth 250 ?

If so, I'm gonna save up and have one too !!!!

Please reply ASAP

It may have onboard graphics which borrows some on the system memory, hence the 228MB

Not bad I suppose, I`d wait and see if the first pc turns out ok first, not to mention paying off any credit card debts...

A day or two after ordering they rang for credit card details and gave a delivery date, it arrived on that day -good marks.

Quite an attractive case and windows 98 loaded nicely, had a problem with the audio, rang their helpline and was told it would want 98Se, updated to that and no more audio prob.

Having trouble with the modem, I think they have sent the drivers for USB when it is a PCI modem. Lots of help on the Conexant site but have yet to go back and try again with the modem.

On the whole quite happy with the purchase.

Apologies Mega, wasn't aware you you wanted more info.

STS.......what about a monitor- quite useful!

Will price up your son's spec. out of interest, I'v never been able to get down to some suppliers prices, and I've tried on a few ocassions.

Don't mention Conexant modems to me..... ARGGHHH !

Nothing but trouble....

However, they have just been awarded a BEST BUY for a budget PC under 499 in the new issue of COMPUTER BUYER, out in the shops today ! Only 3.25 too

Thanks again.

Mega.

It was the home PC.

I do not think the chap who sold he P C. to you sister-in-law was doing her any favours. Presumably all S/H or is it new ? I wouldn't pay 250.00 for it.

You can check the RAM by going to control panel - double click system and that shows the full amount of ram.

STS' son is about right on his price I reckon.
