Default DNS Server Not Detected???

Hi there, I was wondering if someone could help me.

Lately I have been having problems with my internet connection. We have 4 computers running on a router, and lately we have been losing internet connection and the above error is appearing "DNS Server Not Detected". The likes of Windows Media Player and other internet applications continue to work fine, but email and web browsing will no longer work.

We have also been getting an IP Conflict message which I cannot understand because all the computers are set to automatically detect both IP and DNS.

Just today I reset everything to manual and set the IP as desinated in the setup booklet and the DNS server as 4.2.2.2 & 4.2.2.3 (which I dubiously got from the web). The interent connection is now very ropey, although as yet is hasn't crashed. But I can no longer access my modem/router as it seems to require me to have selected "automatically detect settings".

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Jon

Since I manually set the IP and DNS settings the internet and DNS hasn't stopped. However, the DNS server addresses I have seem very slow. Does anyone have a better set of DNS server addresses for Virgin Broadband?

Those seam to be in the private address space (reserved for local area networks, not the internet).

I agree setting to automatically obtain dns settings is usually the best solution.
