Smile Re: BANK Transaction Confirmation email DVDzone

I've also just received this email.

Thankfully, I didn't click on the link, and like the previous person, I've got a Mac - so no trouble for me. My entire computer life (so far) has consiisted of only one bug - and that was relatively benign, it just meant that re-starting the computer was a two-stage process. Any PC users out there who suffer "bugs" I'd strongly recommend you consider doing the smart thing, and buy a Mac! It seems that hackers don't write "bugs" for them as a rule.

It appears that these "hoax" emails are increasingly more convincing, I've also had one that looked exceptionally convincing from what proported to be from PayPal, telling me that a transaction for a fairly small sum had been put into my account - but again was a hoax.

As a rule with all these messages, without any verified postal address in the "contact" area, they are always hoaxes.

If the Mac wasn't capable of being targetted then why are there so many virus checkers available from the big companies out there such as McAfee and Norton? Surely you aren't suggesting this is unneccesary software and they are just trying to cash in on the Mac? If this was the case then why are there free Virus checkers too such as ClamXAV.
As for the other hoaxes, yes there are loads. The PayPal one is on the increase but the giveaway is the secure server address shown by a https:// at the front of the address on the link from the email, but I doubt it will be long before the people who spoof PayPal will have this one sorted out too by setting up their own secure servers.
As for the unverified email address thing, Mine showed as verified and there was no reason to suspect this email as a hoax, more like someone had actually bought something using my bank account - So thats another 'as a rule' out of the window.
The people that come up with these are pretty smart and if they want to cause yet more havoc in the computer users community they will. Pity they can't channel their energies into something more useful to the world.

It's not niave at all, it's simply a fact.

UNIX is inherently more stable than any other operating system. A person will have noticed this on their Macs when they install any program that you have to enter your admin password for their particular machine. This alone makes it far more difficult to do damage to a Mac (OS X only). Some people say you would have a job causing much damage even if you tried. Of course there are viruses for Macs, but they are far more difficult to deploy amongst the UNIX community. Any computer will never be 100% safe - but because most hackers obviously want maximum exposure from their dastardly deeds, they won't generally bother with the tiny fraction of the Mac users in the computer world. Also the virus writers will have to be of another calibre (educated guess) to manage to damage a Mac machine. But all of this doesn't mean we should be complacent, that's why people use
McAfee and Norton to offer "peace of mind" - better to be safe than sorry as the adage goes. (although I've seen Norton cause extensive trouble many times over the last 10 years)

It seems your rather arrogant side swipe at Macs in general is slightly over-reactive. Do you have something against them?

Oh, and by the way, it appears that you can't spell 'naive'.

When I couldn't find the site through the link I googled "Ans-Payroll" and found a link to this thread - it's shocking isn't it! Still hopefully no harm done?!

(PS - This is my first post so hi!)

Thanks for your comments. Seems you contradicted yourself in one easy blurb. You admit a virus is possible, you admit you need to use virus checkers for peace of mind (except I wouldnt trust McAfee or Norton). You admit most hackers won't touch the minority of Mac users and my point was it was niave to think it will never happen. You admit users should not be complacent which is all I was getting at. My brother is an anti-microsoft Linux user (and no not just because he uses linux - he honestly hates microsoft) and he has the same point of view that a Linux system could never be taken down. Web servers have been taken down by hackers where the majority of them are Linux based and maybe not by viruses and more denial of service, but how its done doesnt really matter either. There are very smart virus writers out there - very smart - and if they want to do something they will more than likely take it as a challenge to do so.

I didnt see it as an arrogant side swipe at macs and if anything I would say the opposite as your comment being an anti-PC swipe. Read it however you like. A computer is a computer and whilst software is written by large teams of people in the shortest time they can afford to work on it there will always be bugs, just so happens microsoft has quite a lot of them. I reckon half the loopholes the virus writers have found Microsoft didnt even know about. The comment was aimed at users of Unix based systems out there who honestly believe that because they have to login as Admin to do anything major to their computers that nothing will ever happen. Most dont even setup another user and just use Admin all the time!

As for spelling of niave - does it really matter?!??!?!??!

It's not niave at all, it's simply a fact.
