Word 2003 - Helpful Research! Not!

In my work I quite often want to delete a column of text in a Word document and I've always done this but holding down Alt and clicking and dragging, followed by hitting delete.

In my new Word 2003 Alt+click seems to initiate Research and so then I can't delete my column of text.

Any ideas? How can I turn off the Research pop up? Or does anyone know another to select a column of text?
