Default PhonePayPlus - NOC research

At the last General Meeting it was suggested that the NOC should conduct a survey to determine whether the public would recognise the name PhonePay+ as a consumer protection agency.

YouGov conducted this survey on our behalf using the following question;

In your opinion, which of the following BEST describes what you understand by the term 'Phonepayplus'?
- A telecoms consumer protection agency
- A new way to pay for things using a telephone account
- A new form of prepay phone account
- None of these
- Don't know

2083 people were surveyed and the results are as follows;
- A telecoms consumer protection agency 1%
- A new way to pay for things using a telephone account 26%
- A new form of prepay phone account 23%
- None of these 4%
- Don't know 46%

:-)

it's not a great name but then it wasn't very good to start with "Independent Committee for the Supervision of Standards of the Telephone Information Services",.

why don't they just ditch whatever it's called and bring whatever they do / are meant to do under the ofcom banner?

ICSTIS Re-brand

ICSTIS has sent a letter to the NOC informing us of their re-brand to PhonePay+

Member reaction to this name change has not been enthusiastic and initial views are that it is confusing and is more like a service brand than a regulatory one. We also foresee a potential clash with Payforit and Paypal.

The next GM will be held on the 19th Sept.

I would be interested to hear Dave's opinion. He appears to be the only one connected to industry with any balls.

The results in full, as posted to industry forum The Scream:
??????????????????????????????????????????????????
Ok, here is someone from the industry posting, Mr Knell, who has balls, and [also Richard H and] here are some peple posting that know the industry very well (including all those innocent former NOC members "The Regsiter" just called "swiss telco"), but - THIS IS NOT AN INDUSTRY FORUM. Or do I misunderstand that?
"ICSTIS rebrand scorned by premium rate industry"
"The Scream = industry forum"
"The Scream = premium rate forum"???

By the way: It's great that The Reg links The Scream. In my opinion T/S is one of the best ressources for industry background investigation. I'm glad that I could add this or that here

Also from the Register article:

A Reg reader put a wise finger on the potential for confusion when the rebrand was announced, noting: "The real problem with 'PhonePayPlus', however, is that it sounds exactly like one of the crooked operators they're supposed to be policing.
I think that Reg Reader has got the wong end of the stick here. The real problem with 'PhonePayPlus' (AKA ICSTIS - at least until October) is that it is exactly like one of the crooked operators they're supposed to be policing - indeed, four of the ICSTIS board members are current or former representatives of crooked operators*.
