Gaming lag problem

Hello people
Ive got a problem with gaming lag on the ps3,well actually its just 1 game really and thats Fifa 08.I have a bt home hub set up downstairs and use the laptop and ps3 wirelessly.Ive opened up all the correct ports for Fifa 08 and the ps3 network ports so i know thats not the issue plus ive just taken the hub upstairs so i can connect to the ps3 via ethernet to see if that made a difference but it doesnt really,im still getting some lag.I make sure also that im never downloading anything while im gaming.
I was wondering if anything could be running in the background on my laptop that uses my connection that i dont know about ??? and how would i find this out ? also Ive just downloaded a broadband usage monitor that tells u how much youve downloaded and uploaded during the month and thats constantly lighting up green which says that im downloading/uploading even when im just looking at a site and not actually doing anything.i mean its only little amounts when im just looking at sites but still,should it be doing this ???
Any suggestions would be great , thanks alot.
oh 1 more thing , i was thinking of getting a couple of homeplug adapters which ive heard great things about,anyone reccomend them ??

You could just switch off the laptopp completely and try that. Also, I have spoken to a few friends that say Fifa '08 is always laggy. Must just be their servers are utterly crap.
When you are viewing websites etc, You are always downloading information wether its little amounts or large amounts its always speaking pretty much. Dunno what a homeplug adapter is either. Sorry. Hope that was of any use.
