If you ain't done so yet check Microsoft updates under hardware support,as i know that there used to be some support for dell pc's, of should there not be 1 or it be the wrong 1, then i suggest that you download a free app Belarc adviser install/run and it will give you a list of all hardware/sofware installed on your pc,and also gives you a security audit as well you can get it from here http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html, once you establish the motherboard details and possibly the sigmatel on board sound card AC97, it may help you track down which driver is the correct one here's one i found http://sigmatel-audio.software.informer.com/ hope something is of help to you, if you are still stuck, post the hardware part of the generated list from belarc on here and somone may be able to help you further

Hiya.
I found one driver set which contained the Hardware vendor ID string.... Hardware ID - VEN_8086&DEV_266E&SUBSYS_01A51028 Here.... ftp://ftp.dell.com/audio/S1wua01i.exe Right click on the above file and select Save Target As... Uninstall any drivers you have tried, delete the sound card in Device Manager, if applicable. Restart the Laptop and cancel the Found new hardware window. The above file is a self extracting file, so just double click on it to start the installation. Hopefully, it is the correct one.

Found the real McCoy, this one is from Dells own support page for the Dell Latitude 110L.
ftp://ftp.dell.com/audio/R99254.EXE Again its a self extracting file, so use the same info in my previous reply for downloading, uninstalling old drivers and installing new drivers, etc.

Hi I sharif.
Welcome to The Scream! ![]() My suggestion would be to try the drivers directly from MSI, who made the Motherboard. Firstly, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the Realtek drivers, if applicable. Then go to Device Manager and see if the Audio entry for Realtek is present, if Yes, then right click on that entry and select Uninstall. You may need to reboot the PC, but cancel the Audio Driver install if it finds new hardware on bootup again. You can get the Audio driver from the link below, under the heading of.... ADI SoundMAX (AD1888) Drivers http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=do...=1&prod_no=179 The zip file contains a Folder, so just unzip the file to your Desktop for example. Go into the folder it creates and click on the Setup.exe From there the drivers should install and hopefully, install without error. Restart the PC again after installing the Audio drivers. Failing that, you could try installing the Drivers in Safe Mode. There seems to be quite a few people with the same problem that you have. EG, BSOD's random reboots, etc, all pointing to the ALCXWDM.SYS file ![]() Let us know how you get on.

Hiya.
Thats great news and its no problem with the help. ![]() There may be differences between the Dell audio driver/software and the MSI one, its always best to go to the manufacturers site for the correct Motherboard drivers, etc. Everest and Belarc Adviser, are two valuable programs to have to hand. From one or the other you will find most device manufacturers/models/versions, etc, once you know those, type it into Google and/or look for the manufacturers website for the best drivers. Most motherboards, now have the audio/video/network chips onboard, so the Motherboard manufacturer website, is the best place. For add on items, such as Printers, Scanners, Graphics/Audio cards, etc, go to that manufacturers site.

Hiya.
Never heard of Mercury myself and there is very little on Google about them. I found the Mercury website, but your model number is not on there, there is a 553 Notebook, which has no downloads and a 550 Notebook which has all the downloads. You could try the 550 audio drivers, they may or may not work, here is the link to the 550 drivers page, the audio drivers are the second item in the list, 12.68mb, but they date back to 2004. ![]() http://www.mercury-pc.com/downloads_...?productid=373 Let us know if they work or not.

Hi faosy, welcome to The Scream!
![]() Assuming you are usiing Windows XP.... There is a selection of HP 540 drivers on the HP site, in the link below for Windows XP. There are 2 drivers in the Drivers - Audio section. It recommends that you install the Microsoft Universal Audio Architechture.... driver first, then install the ADI SoundMax.... driver second. I believe the driver you are missing with that PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_284B&SUBSYS_3618103C&REV_03 is the Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture driver, which is the second one in the link below. From the above recommended installation process, I would download both drivers to your Desktop for ease of location, then uninstall the audio drivers you have installed at present, reboot the PC, then install the Microsoft driver first, followed by the ADI SoundMax driver. Otherwise it may not work. Cancel any New Hardware Found popups, just install the 2 drivers directly from the downloads in the correct sequence.... Microsoft driver first, ADI SoundMax second. http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...ID=1093#113165 Let us know how it goes.

Hiya.
I assumed that the PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_284B&SUBSYS_3618103C&REV_03 was the unknown device, since thats what you posted above. ![]() Anyway that unknown device you posted now is the HP Quick Launch Buttons. ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp49001-49500/sp49104.exe Description. This package contains the software that enables the HP Quick Launch Buttons, which are special function keys on HP Notebooks. This software works with supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. We need to establish what is working and what isnt. Is this a fresh install of Windows ? Assumed Operating system Win XP, Yes/No ? Did you install all the drivers that came with the Laptop, if applicable. Access to the Audio setting are.... Start > Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices In there you can select various settings that are suitable for your Laptop. EG. Under the Volume tab, the default audio device name should show in that window, you can also checkmark the Place Speaker icon in the Taskbar. At the bottom of that same window is a Speaker settings area. By clicking on the Advanced button there, you can select what type of speakers you are using from the dropdown arrow box. Under the Audio and Voice tabs, it shows the Audio Device/s used for Output, Recording, etc. On my spare PC, it shows SoundMax Digital Audio, yours should show a similar Audio device in all area's. Is there a Speaker icon in the system tray ? Make sure it isnt set to Mute. Have you checked the Audio Properties to make sure the Sound card is correctly set as the default device? Have you checked the Speaker setting to see that it is set for Laptop Speaker/s and not Headphones, etc ? There should also be a SoundMax icon in Start > Control Panel, maybe check this also for any relevant settings.

Hiya.
I was going ask if the speakers worked OK or not in my next post, lol. Oh! well, at least you know the source of the problem and have found a temporary solution. Maybe some external speakers would be OK if the Laptop is used on a table top or something. ![]() And no problem with the help.
